Surface Modification Techniques for Polyetheretherketone as Spinal Interbody Fusion Cage Material to Stimulate Biological Response: A Review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Currently, spinal interbody cages are crucial for fusion surgeries. Due to the mechanical and imaging characteristics of polyetheretherketone (PEEK), it is a widely used material cages. However, bioinert PEEK has poor osseointegration, thereby preventing ideal Therefore, efforts have been made improving biological activity using surface modification techniques, including physical as well chemical modifications coating. In this study, we reviewed analyzed recent studies on techniques enhance our understanding future studies.

Anterior Cervical Interbody Fusion Using a Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) Cage Device and Local Autograft Bone
A nterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has been performed with various techniques and devices for many years. Autologous iliac crest grafts were initially used for the Cloward and Robinson and Smith techniques, but because of iliac crest graft site complications (eg, pain, infection, fracture, dystrophic scarring), the procedure was generally superseded by allograft implants. These imp...
متن کاملSubsidence and Nonunion after Anterior Cervical Interbody Fusion Using a Stand-Alone Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) Cage
BACKGROUND The purposes of the present study are to evaluate the subsidence and nonunion that occurred after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion using a stand-alone intervertebral cage and to analyze the risk factors for the complications. METHODS Thirty-eight patients (47 segments) who underwent anterior cervical fusion using a stand-alone polyetheretherketone (PEEK) cage and an autologo...
متن کاملIs one cage enough in posterior lumbar interbody fusion: a comparison of unilateral single cage interbody fusion to bilateral cages.
Posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF), as recommended with bilateral lumbar interbody cages and pedicle screw fixation, has increased the successful fusion rate to nearly 100%. Presently, a unilateral approach to the disc space with a variant of PLIF, the trans-foraminal interbody fusion is often used. There are few clinical studies of unilateral interbody fusion. The clinical and fusion res...
متن کاملStabilizing Effects of a Particulate Demineralized Bone Matrix in the L4 Interbody Space with and without PEEK Cage - A Literature Review and Preliminary Results of a Cadaveric Biomechanical Study.
We reviewed the biological elements supporting the usefulness of a specifically designed particulate form of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) with spinal fusion, and report some limitations of its use described in the medical literature and in the interbody space using a cadaveric biomechanical model. A literature review and description of the techniques used to augment spinal fusion are present...
متن کاملLumbo-sacral interbody spinal fusion.
During the years from 1948 to 1956 a lumbo-sacral inter-body spinal fusion was done on forty-eight patients through a posterior approach. The operations have been divided chronologically into three groups. Improvements in the surgical technique were added in the two later groups, so that ultimately a new operative procedure was evolved and used in the last group, which gave the highest rate of ...
